They arrived in Kalgoorlie a week later. It was a bustling city of about 30,000. As they headed for a stable for Hobart to board Betsy, Tony couldn’t believe how many bars lined the streets. He mentioned it to Hobart.

“Prospectors. They find a little gold, and they have to drink it away. The only people who get rich during a gold strike are the bar owners.”

“And you,” said Tony.

“I ain’t rich, but I’m doin’ okay. I keep my drinking to a minimum and bank the gold as soon as I find it. You just gotta be smart about it.”

Tony stopped suddenly and looked around him. What was he going to do?

“You okay?”

“Huh? Um, no. Hobart, I have no idea where to go from here. I didn’t plan this well.”

“You talked about this Hanna woman. That’s your problem right there. Women. They make a man’s mind go crazy. I assume you don’t have any money. You didn’t think about that, right? Man, you got it bad.”

“Got what bad?”

“Lovesickness. Look, you saved my life back there, so I’m going to give you a small stake to get started. I don’t have much to give you, so I suggest you get a job and earn some real money before heading to Perth to find your woman. You want to impress her. You don’t want to arrive broke.”

“Thank you, Hobart. You’re a good man.”

Tony didn’t want to wait, but what Hobart said made sense. He couldn’t drag into Perth penniless. But where could he work? And then he saw it. Almost every bar they passed had a help-wanted sign in the window. He would have Hobart ask around for the best bar for him to work in.

He would stay for a couple of months to earn some money, then find some transportation to Perth.
